Phonics

EMC Phonics Reading Programme teaches students phonics skills to help them pronounce and make meaning at the word, phrase sentence and paragraph levels.  Hence, in due course, students will develop a basic sight vocabulary as well as an increased familiarity with the sound system (phonology) and the different sounds (phonetics) of the English Language.

This enables students to acquire reading techniques and skills in a friendly environment that emphasizes reading as an active activity.

This reading programme will cover sounds of consonants and vowels, consonant blends and phonograms.  Besides phonics, pupils will develop and practise reading skills with action rhymes, narratives, poems and other non-fiction text types.

At the end of the programme, each student should be able to read, comprehend a given passage and to articulate using simple words and sentences thus become more confident and better readers.

Our phonics are conducted in an engaging and lively manner.  Each class will be provided with the “My A to Z Phonics Readers’ Classroom Set (EMC Proprietary Learning Resources).  There will be accompanying audio CD and proprietary worksheets aimed at developing and enhancing the pupils’ phonograms and phonics skills.

At the end of the programme, pupils will be able to:

  • Develop phonics skills to decode words (phonology)
  • Develop fluency in reading
  • Recognize high frequency words (word attack skills)
  • Improve their grammar, vocabulary and attain better comprehension
